We are reorganising our server room at the moment, and one of the things being proposed is that we redecorate the room in which all of our server and telecomms equipment is being held in.

I've read that you shouldn't use solvents to clean PCs, but the only thing that could potentially damage our servers would be fumes.

The room is not very well ventilated - it doesn't have any windows - and not very big, if we were to have the room repainted or the floor retiled/painted, is there any risk of damage to the internal workings of our servers?

Where I work there are a few computers down on the shop floor that are exposed to way worse than a bit of paint fumes (industrial solvents for printing etc.) tihs isn't good for the machines and does shorten their life quite a lot. However, just painting the room should have a negligible effect on your computers, I woudn't worry about it. A server room should have good ventilation anyway so you should probably look into that. Cheers for the advice rockerfellerz.

Our server room does have an air-conditioning unit, mainly to cope with the heat of Summer, and a vent in the ceiling. It just doesn't have much in the way of fresh air, mainly due to the room being isolated so as to provide some cheap security.

Ammonia fumes can attack your electrical connectors, causing stress-cracking corrosion. Newposter
