Hi Guys

Is it true that you can't solder on a motherboard with an all purpose type soldering gun, 30 watt, pencil type? I soldered the a/c jack on my presario 1200 and now I can't get a boot to post/bios. I called a local shop and they told me I'd probaly fried the board by using a common iron.

thanks

It could hurt the board under certain circumstances but it is not a given. I solder on circuit boards all the time.

Modern mobo's are manufactured in multiple layers. You can damage a "trace" on another layer if you're not careful. I (carefully)use a 15 watt pencil with the tip filed down to a needle point. (Yes, you can poke yourself if you slip!).

If you have to do any soldering on a mainbord use a cordless soldering iron. Normal irons have, most of the time, some leakage currents and really can fry your bord. We use in our computer lab only gas operated irons, they are of the pencil type and work very well indeed. You can also remove the tip and then heat up an Ic, from the top, untill you can move and remove it. We changed many soldered in Bios chips that way and never had any problems.
Regards

Jurgen
