Software VPN clients and Linksys 1

What do y'all suggest as far as software VPN clients when connecting to Linksys routers. Linksys support keeps suggesting the Win XP client but after looking at the hoops you have to make the OS jump through I figured there has to be a better way. It seems IPSec really throws a kink in the XP client. I would really like something I could call and talk to someone the first few times it is set up. (probably means a Cisco product at that point). Anyway, any suggestions would be helpful.

I had downloaded a demo of Greenbow but never got around to installing it or playing with it.
I have a mix of Linksys routers. I am trying to setup a VPN WAN using an RV082 at the main site and a mix of BEFSX41's and WRV54G's depending on whether or not I require wireless. The RV082 is really not living up to the claims made by Linksys Sales. I had thought about maybe replacing it with something from....Sonciwall...maybe?

I need to know which router has the Static IP and Dynamic IP and which one is your main router?

Are you trying to configure these stuff as Gateway 2 Gateway or some sort of Client 2 Gateway?

Let me know the whole settings..overview..

Currently the RV082 is the "Main" router. It has a Static IP address. At this time there are two VPNs. One is to a Wrv54G with a static IP and the other is to a BEFXS41 with a dynamic.
Linksys support told me the only way for the 'SX41 to work was to set it up with IP Only security and then we would have to change the IP in the RV082 everytime the dynamic IP changed in the 'SX41.Boy would I like for them to be wrong.

So far, all of these are connected to Cable Modems for 'net access.
Is this enough info?

Linksys tech support is wrong. I've setup a stable tunnel between two BEFSX41s (both on dynamic IP) and from an RV082 (also on dynamic IP) to each of the BEFSX41s. This is standard Gateway to Gateway configuration. There are a couple finer points, though.

1) Use DDNS setup in each dynamic IP router to keep a dyndns.org Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) up-to-date with the current dynamic IP address of the router. (Setup of several such FQDNs at dyndns.org is free.)

2) Firmware for the BEFSX41: Version 1.45.7
This was a Linksys beta release, but continues to be the most stable for the BEFSX41. Links to this firmware are available at dslreports.com in the Linksys forum. Search for BEFSX41 and firmware and you'll find it. NOTE: You DO NOT want firmware newer than 1.45.7! (I caution since 1.50.18 and 1.51.0 versions of firmware are currently available).

3) Firmware for the RV082: Version 1.1.1 or later (current version is 1.1.5)

The rest is pretty standard setup stuff. If you need help, please post again.

This is sort of getting away from my orginal post, but....
Ok, I have an account set up with DynDNS.org and I have a domain name to use.
Here is the way I see it. I fill out the fields on the Dynamic router w/ the account info I got from DynDNS.
I guess the router will automatically check for changes since it has the username/password?

Will I use this domain name in the Remote Secure gateway of the router w/ the static IP?

Also, how long does it REALLY take for the DDNS to take effect. The website said 48 hours but you know how that stuff goes.
If this gets too far off subject I guess we could move it to a more appropriate forum if necessary.

update!!! I think it works. I am remote from both routers right now, but I used the DDNS info and they both show connected right now. We'll see how stable it is once we turn end users loose on it.

Can someone e-mail me a Step-by-Step? I have Windows Server 2003 with a LinkSys BEFVP41 Router. I am using a cable modem (dynamic IP). I need to get 3-5 clients running Windows XP Pro access to the server. I've been researcin this for about a week and haven't found a good solution that works. Any suggestions? Any help is greatly appreciated

I am just getting into the thick of things with VPN tunneling. I just had a few questions. The linksys routers that hudr & webmeisterus are talking about, do you need to have a VPN router on both end points or is there a client that comes with the either VPN router that one can install on a end user PC?

I have been using the Win2k VPN connect. Not too many hoops.

Set up a host computer with static-ip (192.168.2.150)
Set up Router VPN ports to point to 150
Set the 150 computer to accept incomming connections (username/password)
Have Client VPN to router's internet IP adddress.

I do, however, find most times I need to connect twice. I connect the first time, and I don't receive any packets back. I disconnect and reconnect to the VPN and it works fine. Almost like it needs to warm up.

But it's been a life saver to get around the work firewall that puts a damper on my World of Warcraft time. I just use my home internet connection from work to make the hours fly by.
