Based on an old email I read last night (the last link below), converting the docs to Adobe Acrobat PDF files before uploading them would prevent potential security problems that Word docs can pose if you aren't careful. Besides that reason for PDF, I wonder if PDF files would also be easier to manipulate when you are building your Web site.
Because I convert all of my docs to PDF files using Adobe's Acrobat Professional, I wondered if I could build my first Web site (this weekend!) with that software; but, I got lost on Adobe's user-to-user forum site, and I chose instead to use FrontPage and to seek Tek-Tips members' help, because I hope FrontPage will be a faster Web-building/learning process--I have an April 30th deadline for a school project.
However, in searching for the link for the security info for you, I ran across this comment by a Woody's Lounge member as to software for Web building that will give you some other options. As for me, FrontPage is my choice due to my deadline.
