Software for Lucent Win Modem 1

Greetings,

A friend found for me on my computer, the Lucent Win Modem under this path:
Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Computer Management>Device Manager>Modems
He told me it could work as a fax modem, but now how.

Can someone tell me what easy-to-use software I need to make this fax modem work? I'm using Win XP and have cable internet. Is it likely that the software already exists on my computer, and I just need to know the name of the file?

Do I have to activate dial-up to make the fax modem work? Excuse my ignorance.

Win XP has a fax program built in. For a test, type up (or click on a document) you can print. Select print. When you go to print, you will be given a choice of printers to use. One of those will be "Fax". Select that one, and you will go through a few pages of setup (phone number to send to, etc.). If you have a phone connection to the modem, it will dial your phone and send automatically. Just make sure the telephone isn't being used at the time! You don't need to activate dial-up service.

Well, I followed the instructions, and everything seemed fine. However, with THREE DIFFERENT fax numbers, at three locations, all continued to say the line was busy, and I tried over and over with all three.

So now, I'm thinking I set up something incorrectly. On the sender info, the prompt asks for the sending fax number, so I put in my home phone number. Could this be what is messing it up? Should I leave that field blank?

Any other ideas?

No, you have to put your sending number in (Federal law - you must provide an ID [phone #] number. Do you have a friend with a fax machine, or anywhere you can phone first, to make sure the receiving line is clear? I just (last week) faxed a place, and was having the same problem (twice). Waited 10 minutes, and it went right through. Business fax numbers are often busy, that's why (if you look carefully at your fax setup screen, you will see a setting on how much time between tries if busy. That's why I use an aquaintance to test any new installation.

Yes, I was testing with a friend, but he wasn't able to get to it to see if it was busy. Then I tested with Kinkos and called them. They said it was probably busy when I tried, but didn't know. The third place was an employer for a real fax, and they seemed to be busy, too. I just thought it couldn't be that they were all busy, and there must be something else wrong with what I did. Especially since I tried all three over and over, with time apart.

I just went out to manually fax, but I don't want to give up on this.
