sockets and SSL

I have a working piece of cli code that connects to IRC and acts as some services; however, I would like to make the connection more secure and was wondering if it is possible to use SSL over those sockets.

I looked on php.net but could find nothing, I don't suppose its a popular request!

That's a little unhelpful as there's no details of where to set passwords etc.

I didn't think it would be possible, maybe someone can code a module to do it.
