I've got a couple of ASP pages that use CDONTS to e-mail notifications to us. They were working fine until a couple of months ago. Now the only time they work is if I reboot my IIS server. In my event log I have the following message:
Source: SMTPSVC
Event ID: 4000

Description: Message delivery to remote domain "mine.org" failed for the following reason. The connection was dropped by the remote host.

"mine.org" is, in fact, my own domain and both the IIS server and exchange server are inside the firewall.

The puzzling thing about this is that the messages are sent when I reboot, as if the service starts and then shuts down. But I don't have any event's saying that and the services manager says smtp is running.

I'd appreciate any help anyone can give.
Thanks

Hi,

I have similar incident, however i was using ASP with SMTP5.0 only.

It was found that my Symantec antivirus 9.0 with SMTP scan cause this symotoms. till date i have not found any supporting log yet. but by disabling smtp scan seems to resolve the issue.

I know no voice, I knew nothing about systems,
i know NUTS on networking, Therefore I dont know anything!

Hello,

I had McAfee Cirusscan 8i doing this too. It basically blocks port 25 - disabled that "feature" and all returned to normal.

Simonchtan, That was exactly the missing piece in the puzzle. If you go to symantec and search for Document ID:2004061009504348 (the URL is about a mile long), they describe the problem and work arounds.

Thanks again.
