I'm not familiar with "sms modem" so can you let me know how they differ from simply sending a text msg via any PC E-mail to a cell phone?

e.g. e-mail

To: <phone number>@cingularme.com              for Cingular phones
To: <phone number>@messaging.sprintpcs.com     for Sprint phones 
To: <phone number>@vtext.com                   for Verizon phone
  note omit the < >'s
