SMS 2003 migrate to Regular windows 2003

Ok,

I have a customer that has SBS 2003. They want to move away from Small Business server and conduct their activites on a regular windows 2003 domain.
So right now they have one SBS and they want to migrate that over to 1. 1 2003 Windows server for DC and 2. One Member server with 2003 Windows server and exchange 2003.

My question is this, is there any good white papers on moving everything from your SBS 2003 to regualr windows 2003 servers and then decomissioning the old SBS

They have a "regular" Windows 2003 domain.

If they insist, then look into a transition pack, which will save them licensing costs when they purchase the new CALs.

As 58sniper says, they have a "regular" windows domain. SBS is the same thing with different (I might add generally EASIER) management tools, and a few restrictions, most of which are perfectly understandable and should not impact most small businesses.

Few small businesses need trusts (which you cannot have with SBS), few need to change FSMO role locations (which you cannot do with SBS), and Terminal Services is fully supported - just not on the SBS server (which would be a HUGE security mistake anyway!)

The only other limit is in terms of the number of users - and when you reach that limit (75) that's when you use the transition pack to remove these limitations.

thanks for the responses, so this transisition back, once applied i can get rid of SBS off the network correct?

In regards to licenses he has all licenses already so is the transisition pack absolutely neccessary?

Well, SBS licenses aren't valid in a non-SBS environment. If you've already purchased non-SBS licenses, you overpaid for them, as the Transition Pack is much cheaper.

SBS licenses are SEVERELY discounted. The transition pack is required as, besides the software needed to remove the restrictions, it also costs the difference in price had you not gone with SBS in the first place.
