I have 3 comps
1 hub, 1 router, 1 adsl modem

2 comps are hooked up to the router (one is win98 other is xp)
1 comp hooked up to the hub, its winxp (yes i know i dont need it hooked up to the hub, but thats part of the problem)

NIETHER of the comps can transfer files to each other, connect to each other over a LAN, or PING each other

I have no idea why, they are all on the same ISP
cept 2 are on a router and 1 is on the hub
a diagram of my setup is here

I have the ROUTER's firewall turned of....
when i run IPCONFIG on the winxp comp HOOKED up to the hub
i get this

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : my.host.isp.net
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 142.59.54.22
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.248.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 142.59.160.1

on the computer that has win98 thats connected to the ROUTER
says this from WINIPCFG

IP ADDRESS: 192.168.2.101 (that IP is not a IP from my ISP.. my router makes it like that)
SUBNET MASK: 255.255.255.0
DEFAULT GATEWAY: 192.168.2.1

my other computer running XP which is also connected to the ROUTER says something like this

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : blank
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.2.149
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.2.1

thats all i really know...plz help

swashbuckler,

There is no general rule for games, although there are no particularly hidden secrets either.

Depending on the game you may need to trigger ports, forward ports, use place the computer in the DMZ.

In your case you will be a lot happier if you:
1. Disable the firewall, as it does stateful packet inspection and this can only be bad for gaming;
2. Place all the machines in the DMZ. I can only make a guess here, but if the public IP was 0.0.0.0 then all public/WAN site traffic should flow. But I do not have one in front of me to test.
3. You may be better off going with static port assignments for all the machines. This would be done in each computer's property sheet for the network adapter, under the property settings for TCP/IP. You could use the following addresses: 192.168.2.2, 192.168.2.3 and 192.168.2.4; all would have a subnet of 255.255.255.0.
4. For specific Game settings behind a NAT router, see this site: 5. I still am troubled by your use of the hub. You are just asking for problems trying to share a single Public IP without a router.

well, i think this may be a huge problem i just found out
there's a certain small yellow cord the goes from my aDSL to my hub, and if it make it go from my aDSL to the router, the internet doesnt work,

the router came with a BLACK cord i use, it goes from the router's WAN port, and into the hub...

i tried messing with all this yesterday, like hooking the aDSL to the router, with the yellow cord, and hooking up all 3 computer's cords into the routers ports, and the net didnt seem to work...
i posted a diagram
it might help

bcastner this thread is getting fairly long is there a way i can contact you like AIM ICQ MSN?

swashbuckler - what did you do when you set up the internet connection in the first place? Did you go through an ininitialisation/logon procedure? (because you may need to repaeat this if you move the connection from hub to router - talk to your ISP about this).

swashbuckler,

I became confused when we got to little yellow and black cords.

In all probability they are both straight-thru patch cables, and you were plugging in the little yellow cord from the ADSL to the Uplink port on the hub?

Now the "gotcha" that wolluf warns you about immediately above. Some ADSL systems capture what is called the MAC address of the device connected to the modem and use this for authentication and connection. When you were connected to the hub, (which has no MAC address) the modem likely grabbed the MAC address of the PC also connected to the hub.

So when you move the cable to the router, which has a MAC address but not the same one as the PC on the hub, the modem will not let you connect to the internet.

Usually this problem can be cured by turning off the modem and the router. Unplug the modem from the wall. Wait a decent 3 minutes, not less. And plugging back in the modem and turning it on. When it stabilizes, turn on the router. When it stabilizes, turn on the PC.

Now from that PC that is turned on access the setup page of the router at 192.168.2.1 and check your connection status, as well as the settings recommended above.

As for gaming, and DMZ. The best approach to gaming would be to follow the instuctions for each game and use port forwarding entries. What will happen in most cases is that you will need to list your public IP; that the private IPs of the machines to join will need to be placed in the D.M.Z. for the public IP of the game server, and that in addition each of the gamers will need to make a port forwarding entry from their private IP address to a seperate set of ports. You might need to be on 5001-5003 UDP, gamer two on 5004-5007 UDP, etc. You handle this with port forwarding. Finally, some games require or benefit from the use of "trigger" port ranges.

All of this is game dependent, none of it is standardized. The best general advice I have seen is from the PracticallyNetworked site I provided a link to earlier. All of the game suppliers have Web Sites with FAQs and often Forums to help you set up for each game the DMZ, port forwarding and triggering you will need.

they way i have it setup now, internet works on all comps, if i change stuff around, the internet on 1 or 2 or 3 of the comps doesn't work randomly sometimes, i dont know why my comp on the hub cant connect to the other two
