Hi there

Running Windows 2000 Pro on a Compaq Deskpro ( only 300Mb left free on c: drive). Problem is when going into Explorer it does not list the expanded contents of My Computer, i.e. all the local and network drives. I can press the '+' next to My Computer and after a while it will list the drives.
How do I get win2000 to list the expanded contents of My computer?
Granted there are a few network drives so maybe this relates to the time delay.

Thanks in advance

The network drives will slow it down a little, but not much. If it is excessive, try unmapping them, and re mapping.
Also look out for programs which add context sensitive (right click) menu options. I had a problem in the past with a copy of winzip which I installed over a network. If the machine I installed it from wasn't present on the network, explorer took about 30 seconds to open up... just an idea.

The delay after hitting the + is due to your mapped drives. I had a significant delay because I had created shortcuts to file/folders on mapped and shared drives. Resolving the shortcuts took a long time. I deleted those and, although inconvenient, found the computer in "My network places" instead. For as many times as I actually used those network locations, the time savings for opening Explorer is worth the hassle.

To get the "My computer" to expand automatically, change the target line in your Explorer shortcut to this
%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe C:\,/e

Further to Scott's suggestion about browsing network places, when you have browsed to a location, you can add it to your favourites list and access it from the favourites menu. This obviously wont help you if something needs to be mapped to a drive, but if you are only using mapped drives to quickly locate resources on a network it's a viable solution.
