Hi everyone,

SBS 2000, running on IBM xSeries 200

When I try opening Small Business Server Administrator Console from the start menu, it gives me a 'Server Busy' error message: "This action cannot be completed because the other program is busy. Choose 'Switch To' to activate the busy program and correct the problem." The options are Switch to... and Retry and Cancel (cancel is greyed out).

When I click Switch To, the start menu pops up and that's it. When I click retry, the error dialog simply disappears.
It will also disappear if I alt-tab away from it.

The problem first started yesterday when I tried upgrading arcserve 9.01 to arcserve 11.1, which failed horribly, but thats another story, and I'm not sure how much it relates to my current problem.

The personal console also does not start. The administrator console will start in safe mode though, and the log contains warnings (red crosses) about WMI

Please help!! Thx thx thx!!!

Victor.

So even after a restart this happens? This has happened to me before when the server has been low on resources although anytime i restarted this would usually disappear.

Yes, even after a restart, it still won't start. The only time it starts is if i boot into safe mode.

Actually, now theres even more problems...

I can't access Disk Management in Computer management. It just shows the grey screen with "Connecting to Logical Disk Manager Service" written down the bottom and does not get anywhere from there.

There's hundreds of error messages in the event viewer as below:

· A fatal error occurred while creating an SSL server credential. /* this message occurs about 20 times */

· The Microsoft Exchange Management service hung on starting. /* this message occurs about 10 times */

· The CA Remote Procedure Call Server service failed to start due to the following error:

The system cannot find the file specified.

· The Remote Access Connection Manager service depends on the Telephony service which failed to start because of the following error:
No attempts to start the service have been made since the last boot. /* this message occurs about 200 times */

· The server {1BE1F766-5536-11D1-B726-00C04FB926AF} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout.

· DCOM got error "The dependency service or group failed to start. " attempting to start the service IISADMIN with arguments "" in order to run the server:
{A9E69610-B80D-11D0-B9B9-00A0C922E750} /* this message occurs about 20 times */

· The QoS Packet Scheduler service depends on the Generic Packet Classifier service which failed to start because of the following error:
No attempts to start the service have been made since the last boot.

Now, we can't uninstall arcserve even after many hours of being on the phone with CA tech support and having them trying to manually uninstall it through their RPC service.

Any ideas?

Hi All,

I posted this on a number of forums and even requested MS tech support help so that we could get the fastest reply possible, but we ended up fixing it ourselves on Saturday afternoon (yuck).

It turns out APC Powerchute was the culprit, and the best reply to my posts was from newsgroup microsoft.public.backoffice.smallbiz2000. Dave Nickason (SBS MVP) wrote:

Check out the article below. A number of big issues have been reported
because of this, and with you having an APC error plus the timing this could
very well be your problem. In case the link doesn't work, the bottom line
is to remove PowerChute Business Edition 6.x and replace it with 7. The
quick fix is to stop the APC services and set them to manual (in safe mode
if necessary).

We installed the APC Powerchute 7.04 update (server & workstation) and all went back to normal. That left us with a functional Windows environment so that we could fix our issues with a half installation of Arcserve (which isn't relevant to this forum).

Regards,

Victor.
