I have been told that a Small Business Windows Server software would require two processors and would be shut down by Microsoft if not running the two processors.

This is not ture .... is MUST be a domain controller though ... or it shuts down every two hours if not been promoted after 7 days!

I learned this the hard way! lol

My server is only running a single Xeon chip ... and no probs at all.

Thank you very much.

That must be it. I am actually a programmer who is in control of a server (boy is that a problem) and was told by someone that they had done research and that it required the two processors.

Do you have a link to any official information that I could use as proof.

Thanks in advance.

Actually in reading the requirements closely, it states:
Both editions support up to two CPUs on one server.
which implies that a single processor is supported.

Thanks for the link.

I am running SQL server on the server, but it is a seperate SQL server (not part of sm business server).

Is it a requirement to have the second processor or is it just recommended for performance?

thanks again

Just recommended as SQLServer is designed for multiple CPUs. Depending on the load, I'm sure there's a point where it becomes critical, but that's going to vary from setup to setup.

Ok, thanks, the load is very minimal right now and should be for awhile. Just wanted to make sure that it wasn't required.

welcome to help bud ... dont forgat to purple star us! lol

i think the cost of going for a dual processor system isnt all that high, its deffienatly economicly viable ... it might be worth sticking one in from the start ... conforms to all the future proofing best practices then!

Actually the server is already bought and in place, just was having problems with it shutting down. I am going to try promoting to domain controller to see if that will stop the probelms. It sounds like that is the case.

Again thanks.

Yeah that is definatly the issue ... i would have a look in your event log ... it will be listed in the "system" section in there. I cant remember what error number it has but its quite an obvious one!

Cheers, Rob
