I have a laptop with XP Professional installed. When I am connected to the network the computer is very slow opening up folders and accessing dropdown menus (i.e. right click shortcut menus). When I log in locally to the computer everthing works fine. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

How big is this network? Make sure the indexing service is disabled...

Are the folders which open slowly on the local machine or on the network?

Does Task Manager give you any clues as to what process is using most of the CPU during the hanging?

Are there any errors in the Event Viewer?

macten88 & linney,

Thanks for the responses.

macten88 - The network consists of one server and approximately 25 desktops. Everything has been running fine for the past couple of years. This problem began a few weeks ago and only on this computer.

linney - The folders are on the local machine. Also, I have looked at Task Manager when trying to open folders and it does not appear that anything is happening. 'System Idle Process' is at 98-99%.

Thansk again.

Is there any problem with any mapped drives from the local machine?

Any clues in the Event Viewer?
