Slow Win 2000 logons 1

It is taking users 10 minutes (timed) to apply computer settings and 20 minutes (timed) to "load your personal settings". The old folks with win98 and win95 get on the network with no problems. What's up with that?

Create a user called test1. Log this user onto a Win2k pro machine with no roaming profiles or policies attatched. If this is slow then its obviously not the user. If this isn't slow, look at the user settings. Do you have a lot of policies enforced? Roaming profiles etc?
Also, try a local user on a workstation. Make sure that the spec is at least minimum, really recommended for the 2kpro machines.

Some things I have come across in my travels:
After logging in, go to DOS, type in "set" and see where you are being authenicated..if it is the DC or the local computer. If it is the DC, look at DNS or your network card. Also check event viewer to see if any errors
I have also come across some faulty/slow network cards..you could try to replace one if you have an extra and see what that does...check for full/half duplex settings.

This is probably incorrect DNS settings on the client or DNS is not set up properly within the domain.

If you don't have your 2000 clients pointing at a valid DNS server - you will get these sort of delays. Also Group policies won't be applied.
