We have recently added a second location and decided to connect the two via VPN. We decided on two Netgear FVS318 routers. Everything set up fine and we can view the two sides with no problems ...other than speed. We have partial T1's at both locations ...approx. 700kb at the main location and around 400kb at the second location. The second location has 3 users that all need to access the VPN (one win98 and two XP machines). They can access it ok, but it is awfully slow. Any suggestions as to where the problem might be? The only thing that came to my mind is we have one tunnel between the two routers. Would each computer need its own tunnel? I may be grasping at straws here, but I am just trying to figure out where the problem is.

Thanks!

I don't know the answer that you are looking for but can you help me. Can you tell me how you set these up as I am having problems at the moment setting a pair up. I am using 1 fixed ip and one dynamic.

Thanks

I'll try ...what sort of problems are you having? What LAN addresses are you using?

Both WAN addresses we used are static, so I am not as familiar with dynamic. But I'll stumble through it with you if you want.

Well, I have some ideas on how to clear some of this up. First look at each systems memory this type of network puts a load on a system, some network cards do not have an on board processor.
Second Have the latest patches from netgear, some times some the issues one might have has been fixed already.
Third make sure there are no hubs, that’s right no hubs. Every thing on your entire network should be on a switch.
vpn routers use switches not hub to connect you. Also you can download a little know program from Microsoft called tweak manager, cost about $30.00. It is the fastest and easiest way to teak out your Internet connection. Lots of tools.

You only use one tunnel between two routers. The speed also depends on the upload speeds at each end.

What kind of encription are you useing? the more secure it is the slower it is. Try using DES and not 3DES. VPNs are good but not as great speedwise as newcomers believe/expect!

Altitudeman, try reading the netgear manual, it has step-by-step instructions on how to set this up. To get round the dynamic ip address, try using to assign you a virtual static.

Hope this helps
