Slow Spooling

I am printing a large mail merge from a word&excel to a high speed ink printer and the records spool very quickly(at first)up to about 1800 records, then the spool slows to a crawl. The printer has 32 megs of ram and I have changed the settings for the printer to spool straight to the printer and back with no affect. The box is a pent 333 with 64 megs ram. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
