NW 5.1 ..does anyone know what the hell causes Excel files to be very slow when saving?? File Caching is OFF.. latest client, latest client SP..

Some of my users access the server from a IE Browser using the HTTP NLM.. last friday my server abended and I could not get to a command prompt to shut down the server correctly. ever since turning it off, Excel has be having this problem. I read the TIDS regarding poor performance accessing MS Office products and did everything possible..what could be the problem?? Utilization is normal thats what I dont understand.

any help would be appreciated

I presume that since the reboot, file caching is definately switched off?

Are you running any virus scanning software on the server? Does the performance change if you disable (unload) it?

What is your Min & Max directory cache buffers set to, and what is the current Directory Cache buffers displaying in the main MONITOR screen? And How much RAM do you have?

File Caching is OFF.. I am running Norton on the server..after unloading it no change. I unloaded Norton, Backup Exec and the monitor..just had the command prompt.

2GB RAM. Directory Cache Buffers are set correctly..Can't give you exact nsetting since I am not near the server right now.

Well, to make a long story short, I have fixed the problem. I will tell you, it seemed like there was something hung up, maybe an NLM or something Hardware related maybe with the RAID controller I dont know for sure.. but how I corrected the problem was, Down the server first, power off everything, then disconnect the server from the Network. POwer back up the server, let everything load, then unload everything, RUN DS Repair, that corrected 11 issues. then down the server, connect back to the network power back up and that seemed to correct the problem. I know that may sound simple but like you guys it's very hard to down the server in the middle of the day during month end.

I dont think there is an answer to the poor performance issues with MS Office files..I do notice that it happens maybe once or twice a year, no big deal.

Thanks for your replies
