Hello all,

Our network seems fine, except for one little niggly problem... Whenever we save anything to our userdata folders, regardless of whose, it takes about 30 seconds to save a document, even if the document is brand new and completely blank...
Any ideas?

you might have some collosion, are you using a switch or hub ?

Are all of the user drives on the same server? If so you should start by checking out the hardware on your machine.

Defrag the hard disk(s)
Setup some monitoring to see if you are over using the disk
Get faster disks

Possilby upgrade memory and CPU if needed. The monitors will tell you what is wrong.

You will want to monitor physical disk usage first, but monitor it from another machine to make sure that you don't interfere with the moitoring. CJ

how many users/computer do you have? are you using a 10Mbps or 100 link in your Network? A+, MCP, CCNA

Hi All,

Thanks for the replies. Here is the sitch:
Brand New Dell PE 4400, with dual processor, and 200Gb of Raid disks, and 2GB memory.
Event viewer shows nothing... Perf Mon shows normal usage.
Using a Gigabit card with switch, but then connecting to two managed switches, and 3 unmanaged switches. The top managed switch is #1 in the chain, and the three unmanaged ones are #'s 2, 3, 4, and the other managed switch comes in at 5. The managed switch is new, because we needed more links, and we originally looked for unmanaged switch of same make, but the managed switch was all that was available. (I have often thoughtt his might be the problem, but can't pin it down to this... Perhaps there are some switch/hub gurus out there?)
The network is 100Mbs all over, ecept for the Gig switch inbetween the server and the main switches.
Problems have stemmed from getting the new managed switch, though have only recently become bothersome, but as I said before, we just can't seem to isolate a particular problem with the setup...
Collisions aren't aparent, but it does sound most likely...
How can we monitor collisions on that particular switch, perhaps?

A sniffer or the switch interface may be able to assist you. CJ

Use performance monitor on the server and check the network interface for any errors, bad packets sent recieved, etc. I found a bad nic on a brand new compaq server this way. Good luck. Glen A. Johnson

I am sorry to say this but if you try to sniff the switch, you won't see much. Remember, it is not a shared CD as we used to think of. Your best bet is to use the management interface on the man. switch. There are work arounds, but they ain't pretty.

If you are using something that has a central backplane, then use the man interface that comes with that. You will be able to see all the switch traffic that way.

Thanks all. To keep you up to date, we plugged a laptop directly into the Gigabit switch, and all was working as it should, fast and clean. This strongly points to our 10/100mb switches.
I am convinced it is the managed switch causing the problems. In a couple of weeks, we are coming in at weekend to move switches, hubs, etc. into a new location. WHat we are likely to do is use one to start with (the first managed switch), and see what happens, then add each unmanaged switch, and test at each stage.
I shall let you all know how we get on...
