IBM T43, 1.8 GHZ processor with 1 GB ram running XP pro SP2. Not a member of a domain. After typing my username and password I get a black screen with a mouse cursor for a full 2 minutes, another minute of my blank desktop, then another minute and a half to load icons.

It seems like it is looking for something - domain, service??

If I press ctrl+alt+del after typing my username and password (while on the black screen) everything loads fast!

Does the same with NO network connection.

I have also tried an "In place setup" - Put the XP cd in and choose upgrade. That did not work either.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Do you have more than one Network Adapter installed? Disabling (Disable, not uninstall) any unused network adapters sometimes helps.

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?).

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

FYI

I spent three hours on the phone with Microsoft and IBM in a conference call and they could not solve the problem.

Reloaded from scratch.
