When our users log into a workgroup, login is at a normal speed, however we have to add user profiles to each machine for each user when logging in using this method. We would rather use DNS and Roaming Profiles to allow all users to log into all systems. However, when we users log into the Domain rather than the workgroup login takes anywhere from 2-4 minutes. How can this problem be fixed? Any suggestions? Thanks Thanks,

This could be a network congestion problem. Or it could be to do with their profile size. If their roaming profile is large then just transferring it across the network could take up three or four minutes or more. Try restricting the size of their temporary internet files and their internet history (Tools\Internet Options in ie 5) On the general tab click settings and try cutting down the storage limit to around a 1mb for one or two users see if this alters their login speed. Let me know if this helps
Cheers

I agree, I would start by looking at the profile size. I seen users with 400MB profiles...they would wonder why it took so long to log into the network...

Depending on your network topology and the amount of users, you may want to add more Domain Controllers to help handle the load.

Please provide more details if this problem still exists....

Hmm

check where they are getting authentication if you have
disparate locations you want authentication and download
from the closest GC (using sites?) 400MB profile though
thats alot (yikes), if you can check for packet dropping with
ethereal or another sniffer product you can rule in/out net congestion

I agree with the others. A 3-4 minute login is one of two things:

1) large profile (use the policy editor or registry to restrict size of this if you like)
2) Slow network connection. Cisco equipment is notorious for not properly auto-negotiating network speed and duplex with most network cards. This usually shows up as alignmnent errors on switch ports. Manually setting speed and duplex on the switch port and the NIC will eliminate this and often increases speed 100x. You should have basically zero alignment errors on a normal port.

Hey.

I have the same problem, but its with just one user. Everyone hasa roaming profile, but just this one takes 3 -4 mins! My docs are redirected, so its just a URL to the server. So no copying.

We are running a small network, with about 20 systems. This is using the TCP/IP protocol as well as NetBEUI as it is needed to connect to our DLink Print Server. This is running at 100 Mbps through an Efficient SpeedStream router and 24 port switched hub. Network speed should not be part of the problem and user profiles are small, so are there any other things tha can cause the slow login? Thanks,

Try setting the network card on one of the affected machine to Full Duplex don't let it auto-negotiate. I have never found a single switch which successfully negotiates with all makes of nic. The other thing to look at is the cpu utilisation on your switches Netbeui is a nightmare for killing networks. If you can get rid of it do so. Finally make sure your Network card drivers and video drivers are latest versions also if your machines have any power management then make sure this is the latest. I know this last bit sounds weird but I have seen lots of performance problems which have been down to either video or power management drivers and as your problem is network specific it may help to check nic drivers too.

PS check you protocol driver ages if they're old download service packs from microsoft to update the system older protocol drivers may cause problems

why would i be having problems broadcasting on the server. meaning - - it takes about seven minutes to log on at the checking network settings screen. also, all 25 stations are in their own domains. thank you. a quick resonse would be great.

Now I am really confised.. I was experimenting with roaming profiles and for one of the users that did not have a profile path, I entered a path and enabled roaming profiles. Once I did this, the next few times the person logged in it tool about 45 seconds. I thought the problem was solved. Now all of the sudden it's back to taking 2-4 minutes. The profile size has not changed at all and the network traffic has remained the same. Any ideas? Thanks,
