I have a problem with browsing on my home PC.

When clicking on a web site, it is almost as slow as dialup. I have tried using Explorer and using Firefox and both are the same.

I suspected a DNS issue, but when I ping a site name it comes back instantly with no delay, and no problems with the ping. I can load up the only game I play (BF2) and it shows me as having a great ping (15ms) to a server I am a regular on. No issues whatsoever with gameplay.

I have done speed tests on Dslreports.com and speed tests come back great. (after waiting for the page to load)

What would cause problems only with browsing?

System is an Asus P5B with E6600 Core 2 Duo
3 gig ram
2 150G HD in Raid 0
Internet is Verizon Fios 20/20

Thanks

My first guess is some sort of Malware/Virus.

Instead of me trying to answer the question here, though, I think I'd suggest pointing you over to forum760.

Post there, and I'm just guessing you'll get a better response there. Just b/c this sounds possibly related to that - moreso than a hardware discussion, at least.

Basically, if everything but web browsing is working correctly, it's definitely software. Whether that is from malware or bad settings or just a slow site or two is yet to be seen.

Good call there kjv1611, it does sound more like a malware issue than a hardware one...

but things to check:

clean the Temporary Internet Files (IE) / Cache (FF), the TEMP folders etc... easiest is to use an app like CCleaner...

check the DMA setting of the drives, XP has a build in failsafe, that when it detects 6 or more DMA errors, it reverts back to PIO mode (this is really sloooo and this could be the issue...

check the Internet Options setting "Automatically detect proxy settings" if it is enabled then set it to disabled...

check and see if TCP/IPv6 is installed, and then deinstall it...

How to check if IPv6 is installed (Windows XP):
Open up the control pannel. If it is titled "pick a category", click "switch to classic view." Open "Network Connections." Here there should be a list of your internet connections, they could be network cards, dial-up connections, or others. Find the one you connect to the internet with, for example "Local Area Connection #1" Right-click on its icon and choose properties. In the middle of the properties window you will see a smaller window that is titled "This connection uses the following items." Some of the common items are: "Client for microsoft networks" "Internet Protocal (TCP/IP)"

How to fix (Windows XP): In this windows if you see one of the items labeled "Microsoft TCP/IP version 6" select it and click the uninstall button. DO NOT UNINSTALL "Internet Protocal (TCP/IP)" this will disable your internet connectivity completely.
