Hi folks,

we're using 4 4.5 GB Disks for an SSA RAID5 Array and want to extend it witha hot spare disk...

Is it necessary to choose a disk the same size (4.5 GB) for hot spare or is it possible to choose a larger disk ? Does it make any sense to do so ?

Regards
Thomas

Hi

It must be the same Size.
We prefer to use only the same Size of Disks in a RAID Array

Hi,

My experience with Raids shows that in all cases a bigger disk also does the job - normally the controller formats it to a standard size,as needed per system.

Smaller disk is the real problem !! "Long live king Moshiach !"

Hmm...

Let's say we would use an 18.2 GB disk for hot spare in a raid system containing several 4.5 GB disks ...

Wouldn't we be wasting over 14 MB disks space that way ?
If so, could we say that it is possible to use larger disk but not always wise or is there any advantage we would have by using a disk thats significantly larger for hot spare?

Regards

Using Big size disk doe't not make any sense. It always better to use same size of the disk . Even Raid may misbehave in the case of one disk fails.

yeah i agree, ir makes no sense, and i believe it would be more expensive to buy higher capacity disk, except that you have no choice coz IBM withdrawn this certain part number, too bad for you then.
