Size of Priv.edb changes when Upgrading

I was doing a test upgrade from 5.0 to 5.5. The original priv.edb was 9.4 G. When the Fault Tolerant upgrade was complete the priv.edb was 5.9 G. Is this about right? Does it do a defrad during the upgrade?
