Just getting into SIP trunking with a SIP provider and wanted to ask about a design question. Since a single SIP license allows me to interconnect with a SIP provider as (1) trunk does anyone know how many calls can be handled over this once license (simultanous calls either inbound or outbound) on an IPO 500? Since you can handle multiple calls why would you want more than (1) license? For fail-over with another provider?

i am pretty sure the license allows for 1 call per licensed channel.

Can a single SIP trunk from a provider provider more than (1) call at a time or is it a 1-1 relationship like a POTS line?

This is how it works:
- You can have a SIP Trunk with a provider with one or more channels!
- For every call (inbound or outbound) a license is required (first 4 channel licenses are for free);
- You need a VCM as well to make or receive calls. A VCM32 can handle 30 simultaneous calls with G711 or 22 calls with G729 (90% sure)

So PaulRoM - if I purchase a SIP trunk from a provider - they have the capability of supporting multiple calls over the single trunk however I would be limited by my licensing. Based on what you mentioned - if I purchase a single SIP license from Avaya - it can (by default) support 4 voice channels/calls over the SIP trunk? I assume this is much like purchasing the VCM modules which by default come with "4" channels?

1 sip license = 1 active call
you don't get 4 free

you need a free vcm channel to use sip
you get 4 vcm channels with a vcm32 card
if you use TDM over SIP you consume 1 vcm channel for the duration of the call
if you use IP over SIP you only use the vcm channel for setting up the call
a vcm channel is also used for inbound calls during the ringing stage, calls on hold and parked calls.

Thank you! Seems very straightforward once you have the answers!
