Hi All:

Happy new year ! hopefully everyone will get what they always wish for this year (ie. mo-money..etc)

one question today:

we have setup a testing environment for Exchange 5.5 sp4, everything is up to the same environment as our production server, but it doesn't have IMC installed and enable because it doesn't really have a domain MX record, and its on on the internet, the testing server is on its own network and switches thus its isloated from the production network to avoid confusion (all servers are on NT 4 server, planning to upgrade to 2000)

I am wondering if there is any way we can setup something that will simulate a foreign SMTP server to send the test server outside email (ie. from somebody@xxxx.com )
maybe by using IIS ?

thanks

The test server is missing IMC, that means nothing is talking on port 25. Internet mail travels by default to port 25.

With IIS smtp server, it will accept email on port 25 but there is no way IIS smtp server will be able to talk you your test server since it lacks IMC.

Simply put, you need IMC on the Exchange server to recieve internet SMTP mail.

what happen after I have installed the IMC on the test server, should I contact our ISP to create another MX record for us like we did for the production server ?

thanks

no need for MX records if it's not going to be used for communication with outside people.

You can simply email to a user on your test server with the ip number from anywhere.

test@6.55.47.213

where 6.55.47.213 is the external ip of your test server

Make sure IMS allow Full Relay from whereever ip# you email from.

Also in the IMS Domain section of your test server, add @6.55.47.213 to be relayed, where @6.55.47.213 is your email domain.
