In a nt4 domain if the pdc dies, will the bdc take over authentication automatically or will it need to be promoted to a pdc?

If the PDC dies you will have to demote it and promote the BDC manually.

yes it will....in fact in a normal authentication your client does not always authenticates thru the pdc.....do not promote your bdc to pdc unless you're 100% sure b/c it cannot be revert....

nath01, strongm is right, there appears to be some drug use involved in those first 2 replies you got. When a PDC goes down, you can't demote it, its already down! Anyways, you simply open server manager, and locate your BDC. You can then promote it to take over as PDC. You then repair your original PDC (assuming you want to), and when that is done, bring it online and promote it back to PDC. Have no idea what h5n1 was saying when he stated "it cannot be revert."

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.
