Some of our users are getting 10 second long silent voicemails. The caller calls a backdoor number which then rings their extension and if not picked up the voicemail message starts. If the caller hangs up before the beep to leave a voicemail, an empty message of 10 seconds is left on their phone. Is there a way to have it leave a message only if a message was intended, i.e. if something was left after the beep? Also, very short messages like messages of 1 second (after the beep) are getting dropped. Ideally anything left after the beep no matter how short should be saved as a message.

you can change these settings in the regedit. depending on which version of vmpro these entries are located in different directories.

MinimumMessageLength defautl 3000 ms set it to 1000
SilenceLimit is default 10000 ms set it to 3000

You can search for this key in registry rather than hunting

also, you shouldn't really be getting silent voicemails in the first place. When a call is hung up, it's hung up - are you using analogue trunks by any chance?

The disconnect timer will be off, caller hangs up, signalling is not matching the settings in Trunk.

Yes, we are using analogue trunks temporarily. We will be switching to digital lines a few months down the road. So it sounds like it will no longer be a problem at that point.

Well, if it's easy, my ears are open. Are you saying I need to check the disconnect timer? How is this changed?

Analogue Trunk Line Settings - you have disconnect clear timer - adjust this until you have the call disconnecting properly.

The disconnect clear timer is set to 500ms, do you recommend lowering it? By how much?

it really depends on your local telco - try a few options and test
