Siemens Phonemail SE

We have a Siemens Hicom 150 with phonemail SE. We are trying to access the phonemail remotely and we get connected and then we just get garbage. If we try connecting directly to the modem with a laptop we connect but never get a login on the screen. Does this sound like the modem is bad?
