First off, Hi!

I might be completely wrong here, I have been with pretty much most of the things I've tried and suggested...

I noticed that a number of machines on our network are displaying 'Closing Network Connections' before they are saving the user profile.
All of the machines affected are Windows XP Pro w/ SP2.

Has anyone eles had this issue?

My question is, is there a way to enforce the system to write the profile before closing network connections? Do the network connections actually need closing at all?

Any help at all would be fantastic, thanks in advance ;)

So are the user profiles not getting updated?

Hope this Helps.

Thanks Neil,

There is no write back - sorry, I forgot to mention that :|

User logs in and the files are sent from server to clients. We know the permissions are set fine in that case.

Clients started getting errors on shut down that their profiles weren't being written back. We/I went through the permissions to the point were a set of test users had full control of their profile as well as owning it and having no inheritable permissions and the like.
I'd like to think this rules permissions out, but I still have a small tick in the back of my head saying I've missed something.

But this error makes me think that something else is at play.
With the messages displaying on shutdown, particularly the closing network connections before saving users profile; I'd be inclined to say that maybe this has more to do with it?

Any thoughts?

Thanks :)
Simon

Try;
Group Policy > User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Network > Offline Files :: Synchronise All Offline Files before Logging Off :ENABLE

Hope this Helps.

Comment: user profiles are not offline files.

See if this helps:
User Profile Hive Cleanup Service

Overview
The User Profile Hive Cleanup service helps to ensure user sessions are completely terminated when a user logs off. System processes and applications occasionally maintain connections to registry keys in the user profile after a user logs off. In those cases the user session is prevented from completely ending. This can result in problems when using Roaming User Profiles in a server environment or when using locked profiles as implemented through the Shared Computer Toolkit for Windows XP.

On Windows 2000 you can benefit from this service if the application event log shows event id 1000 where the message text indicates that the profile is not unloading and that the error is "Access is denied". On Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 either event ids 1517 and 1524 indicate the same profile unload problem.

To accomplish this the service monitors for logged off users that still have registry hives loaded. When that happens the service determines which application have handles opened to the hives and releases them. It logs the application name and what registry keys were left open. After this the system finishes unloading the profile.

Just to update this one,

Major oversight on my part!
I hadn't allowed write access to the root folder for the domain users. Not entirely sure if this is THE correct method, but it's all working fine and that's the way we like it :)

Thanks for all the help.

Kind regards,
Simon
