Hi,

I was working with the winXP SP1 home without any problem.
But now I installed SP2 and getting the shutdown problem.
At the time of shutdown XP hangs on the screen "Saving your settings". Before SP2, everything was OK.

I saw the Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 307274,
But It's saying this problem is fixed in SP1.
Is this problem again invoked in SP2. Before doing this patch i just want to confirm if somebody already did the investigation.

Regards,
Amar

After Installing Norton GoBack that came with Norton System Works 2004 my XP hangs when shutting down. I can't see paying Symantec another $30 just to get this answer. I believe it is a problem with the pagefile, but am not sure.
Thanks for your inputs in advance.

I have never seen a 100% solution to the GoBack/Shutdown issue. Some thoughts:

Step #1:
Windows XP may encounter a problem during startup that results in a STOP error message. Depending on the system configuration, the error message on a blue screen may not be displayed long enough to record the error information. To gather important information about the STOP error message and to verify the cause:

Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties. On the Advanced tab, click Settings under Startup and Recovery.
Click to clear the Automatically restart check box under System failure, and then click OK. The error message on a blue screen should remain on the screen so you can record the error information.

Step #2:

Do not use System Restore and GoBack. Disable System Restore and test for shutdown issues.

Step #3:

If dual-booting Win9x and XP, be sure to use at least release 3.21 of GoBack.

Step #4:

. Modify Hung App Time:

Start/Run/Regedit. Navigate to...
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop

In the right pane, choose HungAppTimeout/Right Click/Modify/Change Value to 1000/Exit/Reboot.
Change the WaitToKillAppTimeout from the default ti 1000

. Force Program Exit:

Start/Run/Regedit

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop In the right pane find, "AutoEndTasks" (Create if not present). Set the Value of 0. No reboot needed.

Some general things to try.

Speaking of Paging files, do you have that set to be cleared on shutdown?

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?).

Try using (or creating) another user profile.

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

Hi,

I did lot to hit and trial but nothing work.
Finally I uninstall the SP2 and not it fast enough.
Not I am going to read how important this sp2 is for me.
It not i will not use sp2.

Thanks,
Amar

I know this is an old post but I was having the exact same problem (SP1 and SP2). I did the exact same research and like you, didn't find anything relevant.

However, after reading the reply from TruckingPopeye, it occurred to me that my pagefile was corrupt. My pagefile was 1.5 GB (way too big?) so I deleted it and set to max out at 512 MB. The problem (so far) has disappeared.

BTW, I wouldn't recommend setting a limit on the pagefile if you do any video editing or use any program that needs a bucket-load of memory.

Good luck!

False alarm. Recreating the pagefile only fixed the problem temporarily. The "saving your settings..." hang problem persists!

Sorry 'bout that.

bcaster,

Yes, the "Registry hive cleanup" service did fix the problem. I hate having another friken service running on my system but this one (in my case) does more good than harm. Thanks for the feedback. I appreciate it.

jballi,

I understand the service issue. But this one is worth it.

Best regards,
Bill Castner
