I would like to know how to shut down Windows XP without the message:
It is now safe to turn off your computer.
Thanks
wallie

Just push and hold down the button on your PC until it shuts down.

Sorry you missunderstood my message:
I have 2 computers running Windows XP Pro
On Computer 1 when I select Shutdown it shuts down completely, without any messages or pressing any switch etc.
On Computer 2 when I select Shutdown I receive the message:
It is now safe to switch off your computer.
I want to overide that message and want it to shut down without using the switch.#

We probably need more info about what type of computer you are running. If your computer doesn't support power management properly then this can happen. If it doesn't support ACPI this can happen.

So make sure advanced power management is on.
Make sure that your bios is configured properly and this it supports it. Make sure that your computer is ACPI compliant. If all of this is true it could be that there is something installed that is hanging the operation like a device driver or an application like zone alarm.

Does the computer "lock up" at this point or does this message stay on until the computer shuts down?

The message stays on till you manualy shut the computer down.

Device Manager > right click on "Computer" > you should see "Advanced Computer.....(ACPI). If not, do bcastener's list. How old is your motherboard? It may not have provisions for ACPI.

Check your power options in your CMOS setup. There may be something not set properly that is causing this.

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.

It is a new motherboard (ASRock) and it supports ACPI
Power Management is switched on.
I am running Windows XP Pro.
I have tried all the suggestions without any success.
I even tried a registry patch to Enable Power Off after Shutdown that did not work either.
I am convinced it must be associated with the Bios.
It is AMD Bios V.3.31A
Looking under Power in the Bios I cannot see anything relating to Powering off after shutdown.
Thanks for the help upto now.

The next thing to see is if there are any updates for the bios, motherboard and chipset from the manufacturers.
