Yep, I'd agree about the file and settings transfer; that would be like using system restore - where viruses/spyware can be backed up as well.
First, I would also recommend getting the program,
regscrubxp, from a reputable download site, such as
. Install it, run it, and select all it's findings, and click remove/next whatever the option is. If it causes any problems (it won't be anything major if does), then just restore it, and scan again, sifting through the results. I've not had a problem, but on one occasion that I can remember - it caused Notepad.exe not to open from a shortcut. The good thing is, that it removed some spyware stuff that I couldn't get rid of with adaware nor spybot s&d.
