show live info without constantly refreshing

Hello all!!

I am doing some preliminary development on a new project, i came up with a brilliant idea to fill the front screen (theres not a lot to put in there) except I have just tripped myself up by trying to be too brilliant!

The screen will be layed out as shown

Ok, where 'exhibit A' is I want to put a live Log, as tasks are carried out within the site a log will be recorded. This will be pulled from the Log table, nice descriptive stuff!

I want this to refresh without having to refresh the whole page, i have been informed of frames and i'm about to look at that. Is there any other way of getting this to update only if there is a new record, and if there is a new record i want to be able to do a skysport type update where all of the entries drop down a level and then the new one comes on in a kind of ticker tapes motion.

Am i being too adventurous or is at least some of this possible.

that's possible...you could use regular frames or an <iframe>, and call reload() on the frame.

as for only refreshing when a new record appears...javascript can't connect to or query a database.
