I cannot hide the desktop icons using the desktop icon in the quick start tray on Win 98SE. This is a recent new problem, possibly a leftover of cleaning out old programs and downloads a few days ago. Everything else seems OK. I do a Scandisk and defrag on a regular basis, have a Duron 1300 & 512 megs RAM. Can you help please?
Sorry, I posted this thread earlier in error on the wrong forum...trying again, Marvin

What do you mean by hiding the desktop icons?

The desktop shortcut on the systray is to bring your desktop back to the front and minimize your other windows.

Go back to a good copy of the registry .

Toggle F8 ( when , verifying DMI pool message comes on ) or Press
Ctrl during bootup , depends on your computer .

Select , Safe mode Command prompt

After the C prompt , type , scanreg /restore

Follow the prompts and select a registry dated prior to the problems .

Hi again, I care to clarify my situation and thank you all who have offered help so far. In the past, clicking the desktop icon in the Quick Start tray, would make my desktop show or hide. When it was in the show condition, all icons would be displayed. In the hide position, only my wife's picture(my wallpaper) would show. I could toggle this on or off anytime. Now however, when I'm not set for desktop to be in webpage mode, I can not get the icons to hide. If I'm in a program, clicking on the tray icon brings up desktop; clicking again brings back the program. I can live with this, but my experience of several years of "Plug and Pray" suggests that when there's an unexplained change, it hint's that there's trouble to come. I want to head this off at the pass before it becomes something else. That's why I'm seeking help. I have grave hesitation about going into the registry, so unless I can get step by step help to fix the problem if it is in the registry, I prefer to stay out of that area. Anything else is OK. Thanks, Marvin

No need to go into the registry , all the steps are above .

You have 5 days to restore a good copy of the registry .

the icons will only hide if it is set to webpage mode, dont believe there is a problem, just remembering backwards...the hide desktop icons when viewed as a webpage will only work when it is enabled

Problem is over. Desktop now shows and hides like before. Cause was the install and uninstall of an audio/video communication program. It didn't work for me or my cousin who installed the same program on his computer. We both had other programs corrupted besides the desktop after the uninstall. Using a recent backup, I was able to restore everything that went sour on my machine. It took a lot of time, but having 2 removable drives and moving a lot of files made everything come out OK. Thanks again to all who sent help. Marvin
