Isn't there a way to show the date next to the time on the taskbar?

Depends on how you wanted displayed:

1. You can hover the mouse over the clock and the date will be displayed in a tool tip.

2. If you double the taskbar's width the date is displayed under the clock.

3. you can go into the registry and make some changes there.
1)Open a registry editor (e.g. PHM or Resco).
2) Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shell\
3) Create a DWord value named "TBOpt" and set its value to "3".
Log out and back in. (You might need to restart)

How to display date and weekday in system tray clock?
thread779-1251475

There is a nifty little utility called TrayHelper:

...that I use on all my PCs, and installed on all PCs in my office. Can't live without it. The free version also allows one plug-in, I choose the Atomic Clock Synchronizer that keeps the tray clock accurate. Also instant calendar, reminders, it's full of goodies, and did I mention it's FREE??? No adware or spyware of any sort.
