On the server 2003 the domain being for example thisismydomain.local is what is set but at login from client pc it is only displaying for example thisismydom I can see where this is in the Active directory under pre 200 I think but I want to change this name. Any ideas ?

I am not sure where you can change this with Group Policy or changing what registry key but you can do it with the TweakUI tool for XP/2003.
In the Logon settings there is a tickbox to enable 'Show full DNS domain names at logon'
I have a feeling this is probably setable through a GPO but I haven't seen it yet?
