In W9x you could have a shortcut in ANY derivative of the Start Menu dir, and it was ALWAYS be seen in terms of its hotkey. E.g., if you put notepad.lnk in \windows\start menu\FooBird, with Ctrl-Alt-N attached, then it was accessible everywhere, always - even from a DOS window, which is quite nice.

In 2000 this doesn't work when using a directory under Start Menu for my profile, or All User's either. Does anyone know the real poop on this for W2K? Thanks.

I run W2K and it works for me OK. Can you get shortcut keys to work for an icon on the desktop? If so, try cutting and pasting that link into your directory under \Start Menu\...That should preserve the shortcut keys.

Thanks for checking for me, and relating your experience. Simple affirmations from others are potentially useful when troubleshooting.

It's functioning as desired now. I _swear_ they wouldn't yesterday, even after full reboot! Since then I've done nothing to that folder except another reboot. Anyway, I'm back in happyville. I've now got a large arsenal constructed in c:\Documents and Settings\MyName\Keyboard Shortcuts :)

Thanks again.

DOOOOOOH! Make that c:\Documents and Settings\MyName\Start Menu\Keyboard Shortcuts
