I am hoping to mimic an existing Start -> Programs menu shortcut within a separate application. The original installation that created the shortcut also included some additional arguments (set at install time and not constant).

Drilling down from C:\Documents and Settings\<%username%>\ etc, you eventually reach the "shortcut" with no indication of the arguments. Can anyone tell me where these are stored or how to access them?

Thanks, Linnet

Hi there - have you right clicked on the shortcut you've found in the documents and settings start menu area and looked at its properties?

In here under the "Shortcut" tab you should see a "Target" box that will contain the path to the program that the shortcut starts and the arguments that get passed to it.
e.g. "C:\Program Files\CDex_150\CDex.exe" /PLAY

I hope that helps

Hi M

No, it's more subtle than that. The shortcut created by the installation carries some additional arguments (which is not displayed by Properties), so that the launch is

...\MyProg.exe <argument1> <argument2>

Meanwhile, another source has advised: "An advertised shortcuts refers to an another shortcut which has all the information in encrypted format located at %APPDATA%\Microsoft\installer\[PRODUCT CODE]\ for XP machine and %SystemRoot%\installer\[PRODUCT CODE]\ for WinWindows 2000 machine." (An 'advertised' shortcut being one of two types supported by .msi installer.)

Life is too short to get into de-encrypting, so I'm taking another approach. Thanks anyway.
