I'm curious how Sharepoint reacts when it needs to send an alert out. I'm after what Sharepoint does behind the scenes when a document is modified or an event occurs and spawns an alert notification to whomever has subscribed? Does Sharepoint a polling process that kicks off every 30sec.? The reason I ask is when I setup the notification the email is almost immediately in my inbox. When I modify a document after I have subscribed to be notified, it takes roughly 5 min. for the alert to be delivered.
