Sharepoint as a sign in sheet

The CEO wants to set up an employee sign-in/sign-out system, so that when someone is looking for an employee, they know where they are.

Do you think I could use sharepoint to accomplish this?

What kind of functionality whould you need to have? How should the information be entered? I have been looking into something a bit similar, but this was to enter whereabouts of users, when they for example were at meetings and things like that. So I setup a calendar and did some customization with different views etc. but I was not really satisfied with the results I got. And even if I would get it to work, I would have to have my users actually filling something in the calendar..(that is the hardest part )

I am sure a custom webpart can be developed to be able to do something like what your CEO wants, I'd like to have something similar..but since I am not a developer/programmer my lack of skills are stopping me here.
