SharePoint Alerts/Outlook Public Folder

I have a group of individuals that all need access to the same alerts from SharePoint libraries. Is there a way to do this using a public folder in Outlook. Sharepoint doesn't recognize the folder when attempting to setup the alerts. We are trying to use the public folder option to assist with employee turnover issues when they occue. Any suggestions?
