Shared Printer Security

I am trying to set up a shared printer on a Win2k Server machine. All machines that try to map to that shared printer get an "Access Denied" message.

"Everyone" has print permissions, and I can add a username/password to the users group and it will work... but that information isn't known for most PCs.

This machine resides on an isolated network and should assume that anyone on the network has permission to print. There is no domain. Basically, since this machine is dedicated to nothing but being a print server, we want to remove all security and allow joe user to plug in a cable, map the printer and print without needing a username/password (completely anonymous clients).

Any suggestions? The 2k Server machine, aside from a little bit of tinkering, is at stock default settings. Administrator is currently (and probably permanently) the only user.

If you don't mind, why do you need a win2k server only for print server. Printserver(box) nowadays are not expensive anymore. Anyway to solve your problem, you must put an account for every user that prints to your win2k printserver. The user name and password must be the same on both of the workstation's and server's user manager.

I asked the same question (why 2k server) but didn't get a clear answer. I convinced the powers that be to put Win98 on it and be done with it. Everything works perfectly now.

Heh... not too often that a Windows product has "too much" security...
