I have a mixed Network of XP machines and 98 machines, eventually all machines will be XP but financial constraints mean that for the short term I have to run the 2 together, the issue I have is with an XP print server, when I attempt to connect 98 clients to the shared printer it prompts for a password, nothing entered is accepted, I can see no logical reason why these 2 OS's won't communicate. Has anybody else come across this anomaly and more pertinent does anybody have a solution?

The network has active directory running and uses a pre2000 domain and a post2000 domain which are joined via AD.

Sounds like the 98 PCs are not domain users / computers so are trying to connects as guests.

If you have them as users, then check to see if the user is bypassing the w98 logon screen.

If they are logging on as normal, check the security setting of the shared printer to see if its got everyone, perhaps adding guest as a user. This should allow you to have access to the printing without having to give guest access to the rest of the computer.

Out of interest, can you browse any shared folders on the XP machine from w98's network neibourhood and not get a password required screen?

Check your share/permissions. Make sure your XP machine which is hosting your printing has permissions available for users to access the printer. Try setting up a temporary account then apply the password when asked. See if you can gain access. If so, try clearing the password and see if you can get access.

I have had another look at this and it just doesnt make sense, i can ping the XP machine (name and IP) no problem, both machines are being given IP addresses from the same dhcp server, I have enabled the guest account and added it to the printer permissions, attempting to attatch to any share now brings up a 'server not found', I've tried attatching by IP and Netbios name neither works. The 98 machine is definatley on the domain because it can attatch to other shared resources - similarly the XP machine has other network resources attatched! Believe it or not I have an MCP in XP and i'm well perplexed!!
