Shared Folder Suddenly Prompts For Password

Hi - can anyone offer any advice on this one...?

I have a home network (Workgroup PANDK) and until recently had 3 computers on it: P1 & K1 (desktop PCs wired into the router) & L1 (Wireless laptop).

I have a number of folders on each machine shared out so that any user on any of the machines can access them.

There is one user on P1 (Paul), 1 on K1 (Kirsty) and 2 on L1 (Paul & Kirsty).

Recently I got a second laptop, which I have named L2 and joined to the PANDK workgroup. There is one user on this new machine (Paul).

Since I set this new one up, whenever I try to access P1's shared folders from any of the other 3 machines it now asks for a user name and password. This is more of an annoyance more than a huge problem because I can just enter the password in each time, but none of the other machines on PANDK prompt for a password when accessing their shared folders - so I am concerned that something might have been set by accident on P1.

As far as I can see folders on P1 have the same permissions settings as folders on the other machines.

All machines are running Windows XP SP3 (Pro for P1, L1 & L2 and Home for K1).

Any idea how I can get rid of this annoying little problem?

Thanks

It's a different logon on the new laptop. Even though they are on the same workgroup, you don't have permissions for L2\Username.

But since I added L2, P1 makes L1 and K1 enter a password also - and it never used to.

And also - when L2 tries to access K1 and L1 it does not get asked for a password so something on P1 has gone awry. Any ideas what it is?

There are two sets of permissions that you need to look at. The SHARE permissions, on the sharing tab, and the actual folder permissions for the shared folder.

If all else fails, set it first to "Everyone" Full access, and see if the problem goes away. If so, then you know for sure it's a permissions issue.

If that doesn't work, it may be a cached credentials issue... let me know.

I'll give it a try tonight and post back.

Thanks for the advice.

Hmmm - even if I try to go to "\\P1" in a Windows Explorer window I am asked for the password so I don't think it is linked to folder permissions.

No joy - still can't access P1 - not at all now - just get "P1 is not available

Check your router's settings...

In the case of the P1 access, power down the router and the PC, then reboot both again...

It may be time to start from scratch, and rebuild the network...
