Hi all I have a share problem. I want to set up shared folders on our school network one will be for all users to exchange work Ideas etc, one will be for staff to share work with pupils (read only)I have set these up and put the links on the users desktops and they work my problem is that on opening the folders and accessing the work you can access the server in the other places tab
9not a good idea in a school)any ideas ? I have set up the sharing to either include or exclude the appropriate users but it is this OTHER PLACES tab if I could get shot of it it would be great. If I only knew today what I will know tomorrow.

Itsfisko,

Forgive my ignorance, but what is the OTHER PLACES Tab?

Sounds interesting...

I guess I don't know what this Other Places Tab is either, but I don't understand why it would make a difference anyways. If you've setup security on the server, your users shouldn't be able to access anything you don't want them to.

So you would think , but they can if they click on the shared folder link on thier desk top, they then get a link on left side of the screen which lists other places to look and one of these is the server. PS I am using xp clients If I only knew today what I will know tomorrow.

I must not be understanding something here. Your shared folders are on the server, correct. And you have it setup that students have full access to one folder, and read only to the other. Now what are you afaid they will be able to do by browsing to other places on the server?

Not sure what the 'Other Places' thing is either, sounds like a crappy feature MS included with XP. But regardless as the other people have said if your security is done properly even if other shares are displayed they won't have access to them. If this 'Other Places' thing just displays shared resources on the server (folders and printers etc) and you don't want them shown there you could make them hidden (append a dollar sign to the shared-resource name), if hidden shared resources are displayed still then it's a serious flaw in XP.

Good security still remains the key (combining share level and NTFS security), even if this 'Other Places' feature didn't display if the shares existed on the server and weren't protected it wouldn't take your average computer-literate school kid to find it.
