I have a storage server, Windows 2003 Appliance Edition with a storage array of about 2TB. Attached is an 8 tape autoloader. Backups go to disk on the array and duplicate to tape in the autloader. Backups using Veritas Remote Agent on several servers work perfectly. But the local server backup fails everytime. I have looked into the backup selection and it lists C:\ and Shadow Copy Components. When selecting the SCC the application hangs and needs to be shutdown via Task Manager. So it looks like this is the problem causing the backup to fail. Any ideas why this is happening? Or how to fix it?

Check your system and application log. Most likely its not veritas. Veritas just make calls into it. Run a NTBACKUP to disk on the system state and see what happens.

Being a storage server I bet you find VSS error in the app/system log.

Running VSSADMIN LIST WRITERS is a useful tool. It usually hangs in this instance and needs the server to be rebooted. I reinstalled W2K3 SP1 and have had no problems since. I've heard from others that reloading SP1 can fix problems with COM+ settings and resolve issues with SCC backups.
