Hello,

Is there really no way I could configure an ICS over a Windows 2000 domain using a *workstation* as the gateway ?

I have read it was not recommended by ms.

I tried it anyway, and it almost works :

Network description :

PDC : root server with ad enforced and working, dhcp off, gets ip from the client, cannot get access to the internet

workstation 1 : enforces ics, dhcp service enabled, internet connection working

workstation 2 : gets ip from workstation 1, internet connection working

So far, everything works except I can't get the server to connect to the Internet.

Would this be possible given I don't have any need for hosting web services ? (only need to use internet as for a common workstation). The reason why I don't connect the wan adapter to the server is a matter of cost (lower cost dsl connection whose driver detects and refuses to install itself on a server os).

Thanks in advance.

Basicly your senario should be able to work. How do you setup your DNS on your PDC server? You should assign a static IP address to your PDC and configure the IP of the ICS as the gateway and DNS of the PDC.

You can run ICS on a network that already has a DHCP running as the ICS has a mini DHCP server in it already if you have both running they start to conflict with each other. You are better off using DHCP and then use NAT and RRAS to share your internet connection

It really works.
But I have another problem. Yet it's another post.

Thank you very much, this is a very helpful post.

... just for the sake of precision, my pdc was getting its ip address automatically from the dhcp 'worksation' server, and its primary dns was set to itself at 127.0.0.1.

Pdc now has fixed IP?

Yes, it has.
I took the same as the one formerly leased to the server by the dhcp service on the workstation.

I already had manually updated the dns forward lookup zone for both workstations when I turned dhcp off on the server and activated it on the ics computer.

Everything seems to work until now.

I don't understand how it can work like that... the server getting its dns resolutions from a system and still providing the internal name resolutions to its clients including that system :-(

Additional explanations welcome :)
