Setup.exe not working

I have an old app that I wish to reinstall under XPpro.
Didn't think it would be an issue, but Setup.exe just starts . . and fails.
Tried all compatibility modes, no difference.
This app was for win95 initially, what on earth is keeping Setup from going on with the install ?
What can I do ?

Since it is a Windows 95 Application, it could be trying to access the hardware directly prior to installing.

It is DOS based?

Have you tried to execute the setup.exe from the Command Line and see what message it gives you?

It is a pure Windows app - the Setup will not run from DOS.

are you getting any errors back, or are there any log files getting updated?

Nope, Setup.exe just bombs out. Thankfully, the system remains stable.

An obvious question: Are you logged in as an administrator?

Another obvious question: have you contacted the author?

The PC only has one account. I installed it, I'm the admin.
As for contacting the author, the company went out of business.
But the program installs perfectly on my Win98SE machine, so what gives with XP ?
