Windows 2000 won't start so I try a repair install. During copy of files to windows folder get error 'Setup cannot copy file dx7vb.dll'. Googled this error and 1 person fixed it by changing his CD-ROM, another person said it was due to bad RAM. Anyone know about this error?

I've had a similar situation and it was caused by bad RAM. In other words, the DLL file is read off the CD correctly but it turns to garbage in the memory of the system.

Try pulling one stick of memory out and do it again. If that doesn't do the trick, put that stick back and pull the other.

You could try a memory tester, but that's the sure fire method. If it's not memory, start looking at trying a different CD-ROM drive.

Removing memory sticks didn't work, will have to get another CD-ROM to check. Have a DVD writer but can't boot from it.

Personally, I would be wary of getting the files elsewhere. You could use another computer to try to extract the file from the Cd.

Accessed the WINNT folder from another hdd and a dx7vb.dll file is in the WINNT\System32 folder. How do I extract the file from the installn CD using this 2nd hdd, do I have to go to Setup?

Do I go to Setup and select the faulty partition and Repair, how can I make sure to select the correct partition, the 2 hdds' have 2 partitions each?

Want to do a parallel installation, should I install on the same partition as the faulty system. One website says I can, another says I shouldn't.
